This is why you don’t bunt in the MLB. It has almost no relevance to 8u - 18u fastpitch, although I suspect the relevance slightly increases as the age group goes up.

The next fight I’m going to start is a post called “Don’t Be A Spectator” with charts to show why all the geezers telling their players to take the first pitch are completely screwing their hitters.
I’ve been telling DD that since 10u. You only get 3 strikes.

Here is your D1 baseball. Do they bunt in college baseball?

I didn’t look at it. And I won’t.

They have charts for mlb too, someone else can look that up.

I’ll be manning my cast iron skillet making chicken for tacos. Is there such a thing as chicken carnitas?

Those 123 charts really explain why sac bunting is bad since the outcome of the AB is known (eg an out).

Bunting/slapping/etc with the intention of getting on base is more nuanced in terms of using those charts to ascertain the utility. Really it comes down to (for example with no outs) the run expectancy of nobody on with 1 out vs having a player on 1st with no outs vs player on 2nd/3rd with no outs (the latter two would not be possible if somebody was soft slapping/bunting for a base hit) and then combining that with the probability that a hitter will be able to get on 1st when they soft slap/bunt for a hit vs the probability that a hitter will get a double/triple if they swung away.

So if I have a runners on 1st and 2nd I have a 73 percent chance of scoring. If I sac I have a 75 percent chance of scoring. Even better if I have a runner on 2nd with no outs I have a 70 percent chance of scoring but if I bunt her to third it goes up to 73 percent? Now would I do it in the 2nd inning probably not but if I'm tied in the bottom of the 7th or even down one? The other things these things don't take into account is that the hitters that are actually up (not the theoretical) aggregate hitter. If I have my 9th hitter up and the top of the order is just crushing it it makes more sense to bunt. I know this is baseball stats but likely similar. The opposite is that if I have my top hitters up it's really unlikely I would bunt them as the real expentancy would be higher.
