Alright everybody, Ken, Sluggers and Myself have spent considerable time fighting the spam today (a couple of hours all togehter) banning/deleting spammers and deleting all spam posts.

We want to THANK YOU for reporting them. It makes our job a lot easier.

I have implemented a new captcha for registration (not sure if it will be effective) and we are going to seek new anti-spam strategies with a VBULLETIN specialist. We are not the only forum who has this sort of problem.

Unfortunately, these problems comes from being popular, well-trafficked and well-ranked in Google!

We are going to look at new strategies while trying to preserve a good environment for all users and visitors including the possibility of adding a moderator.

Thank you again for your help. We do the best we can to keep this forum clear of any SPAM!!!

Does it help to tag each spam post or just one for each poster's name? IOW, if a poster has 10 or so posts is it ok to tag just one of them or is it better to tag them all?

WoW!! the Irony... Spammers, Spamming the Spam thread!!

Marc and Sluggers... these spammers will typically use a human to sign up (defeating the purpose of the captcha), and then run automated scripts to spam multiple message boards all over the internet at once. The rate that they do it at, is similar to a brute force attack. I'm not familiar with the back end of vBulletin, but on other forum software, there are modules that can temporarly lock out a user who posts too much in a certain time frame. You can set the number of posts, and the amount of time, to trigger the lock out. Limiting cookie life, and requiring captcha at login would really cut down on this type of spammer. But I know you're also trying to keep the hassle to the legitimate members, at a minimum. Not sure if vBulletin has these types of controls, or something similar, but it's worth looking into.
Whatever you do, it needs to be an automated solution; like Marc said, you all have day jobs.
