10U game. Runner on 1st. Ground ball to second baseman who fields the ball and immediately throws to first for the out without making any kind of tag attempt on the runner going from 1st to 2nd. After the out, for whatever reason, the runner going to 2nd gets confused and ends up in the infield (thinking she is out?). She eventually advances to 2nd with no play being made on her. The defensive coaches call for the runner to be called out for running out of the baseline. The umpire declafes her safe because no tag play was ever attempted on her. Is this correct?

The call is correct. A runner can run pretty much anywhere they want...unless it's to avoid a tag.

Also, the baseline (a straight line between the bases) is not part of the equation. The running path already established by the runner determines the lane they must stay in during a tag-play situation. That running path may be well outside the baseline.

A runner can run to the fence on their way to second. Runner establishes path. Once path is set. Can't avoid tag by 3' either side of path
