I've heard a couple (volunteer) coaches refer to this as a good thing, like an indicator of a quality swing.

I always thought it was something that, if it happened at all, should happen sometime after contact and therefore doesn't affect the outcome.

If the wrists roll too early, like during contact, that's a bad thing but I don't remember what it leads to.

Was or is rolling the wrists ever taught as a good thing? (Like swinging down on the ball?)

It leads to the bat head coming up during the swing which will cause hitting the top of the ball and creating a lot of ground balls to the 6 and 4 holes. The other thing it does is leave the hitter in a very weak position at contact. When the wrist roll then contact will not be solid even if the ball is contacted.

A way to test that is to have someone roll the wrist just before contact and hold it there. You can push the bat back with your finger and they will not be able to stop you.

If the wrist are palm up and palm down you will be in a much stronger position.
