This is more of a rant at the hands of Mother Nature than a discussion but up here in New England, D2 college softball has gotten to the point of ridiculousness. I say D2 more than D1 because the D1 teams from around here do more traveling and although they have missed games they have been able to play a lot more.
Here is our story. We played 12 games in Florida the first week in March, since then we have played one DH and that was on a turf field with 5 ft snow banks all around ,35 degrees and 25mph winds. We were supposed to get going today but you will never believe what happened yesterday, it SNOWED. Now our split season will start on Tuesday. Our field is one of the few in our league that is ready to go. It is grass but the crew did a great job of removing the snow and putting down some melt substance that they also used at Fenway. There is actually a team in our league that has not played one game as of yet. When they were supposed to go south there was an ice storm.
We originally had 51 games on our schedule. Now we will be lucky to get into the low 40s. I would say the average D2 team currently has 25-30 games played. We will be trying to play around 30 games in the next 25 days. So by the time the post season starts we will either be very loose and on a roll or be exhausted and beat up. I know that we should expect to play catch up to the rest of the country but this year is brutal. Somehow we are actually ranked so the team and my DD(senior year) were and still are hoping for a good season.
Just looked outside and I think I saw the sun!! Gotta run !!
