While athleticism and and physical build are important (e.g. Abbott, Osterman) I would never overlook desire, drive, and work ethic. When I look at someone like Lisa Fernandez (5'6") and Katie Sunderland-Finch (5'4"), I don't immediately think "athlete" but instead think "fierce competitor". No doubt they worked their tails off to get to a high-level of accomplishment in the sport and had to earn every single advancement.
