Actually, DD is looking forward to playing 3rd. She sees catcher as her first position and utility as her second. During last TB season, when she wasn't catching (coach rotated pitchers and catchers), she played SS, 3rd, and all three OF positions. She hasn't really played 3rd in a while but what the heck.
The softball program is really struggling. About half of last years V and JV teams refuse to play for the V coach. We apparently aren't the only ones that have issues with the coach. She has to put freshman on the team because there aren't enough sophomores, juniors, and seniors to make a complete team. All three pitchers quit this year from last season.
So really, it's not just an opportunity to learn another position but also develop a leadership role. DD is only a sophomore but she's one of the most experienced players on the team now. It's going to a rough season. Freshman pitcher, freshman catcher, freshman 1st base and two of them don't have any TB experience.
