Odd play...thought the ruling was wrong even though it was to our benefit

Runner on first less than 2 outs.
One hopper to the first baseman and the runner on first goes back to the first base bag bag. 1B steps on the bag and then tags the runner (who is standing on first) and the umpire rules it a double play.
Was it the right call?

Also, another one from this past weekend.

Umpire calls a player out on strikes so she runs back to the dugout. Field ump lets him know there were only 2 strikes (which there were) so he calls the player back. One of our coaches points out that she surrendered her at bat by going to the dugout and she is then called out. I thought she should have been allowed to hit since it was on the home plate umpires mistake that she went back to the dugout.

In your first play, once F3 stepped on 1st base, the force on the runner was removed. Since she was in contact with a base and was not forced from the base she would not be out if tagged.

In your second, the batter had not yet completed her at bat and is not out for going in the dugout. Regardless, it was an error by the umpire who sent her there.

Always tag runner then base. The runner is out even though they are standing on the base.

I see this play quite a bit. Runner on first and ball is smoked to first base where they catch the ball and tag runner (still standing on base) than step on the base. Double play.

It would be great if an umpire could chime in on the exact rule that applies here (runner must advance, but can retreat but not to the bag?).

ASA 8-7-C: The runner is out...When, on a force play, a fielder contacts the base while holding the ball, or
tags the runner before the runner reaches the (next) base...

Along with...Rule 1: FORCE OUT: Is an out which may be made only when a runner loses the right to the base that the runner is occupying because the batter becomes a batter-runner, and before the batter-runner or a trailing runner has been put out.

The net result is that when forced, the runner loses the right to the base they started on. That base no longer offers any protection from being tagged out. The runner isn't safe from being tagged out until reaching the next base. When the trailing runner, or batter-runner, is put out first, then the force out is removed and the runner may again safely occupy the base held at the beginning of the play.
