Clueless Dad needs help with very basic catching knowledge. I don't even know proper stance LOL!
DD wants to get some practice in and I know very little. Chaz and Casey got her hooked up with some great catching gear and the mitt is on the way. I printed out some blocking from one of Chaz's posts. She caught quite a bit in rec several years ago, and 2 games in her very short 3 game healthy span for high school. She is fearless and has a strong arm.
What should I do first to help her? She has no real training and I'm still waiting on the NECC DVD. She was supposed to get a lesson from a Catcher Coach this week but he hasn't returned any phone calls or e-mails. The varsity coach already asked her to be the #2 catcher even though tryouts aren't until the 31st. If she does well, he'll move the current catcher to outfield because of her speed.
Thanks.

Read the "on-line camp" advice on the NECC website Framing | The New England Catching Camp and review Chaz's videos and pics posted here and on his FB page. And like JS noted, catch any pitcher willing to throw to her. The wilder, the better!

That part should be easy! We are covered in snow here and I'll have to start out in the garage because the cages are all filled at least till the end of this week. I didn't look far enough ahead because they are usually really easy to rent. This would be easier if they just put her at third:)

Stances...

"Sign giving" - Up on toes, chest up, glove arm along top of thigh with glove vertical at the end of the knee, throwing hand arm in the corner between the thigh and chest protector.

"No Runners" - Feet about shoulder width apart, toes pointed up the lines (somewhat), heels touching the ground, throwing hand along leg behind shinguard.

"Runners-On" - Feet wider, thighs approx. parallel with the ground, throwing hand (in a fist) behind glove.

Thanks so much Eric!

I'm happy to help. It looks like you found similar information, too.

Since you're just getting started, don't worry too much about blocking yet. Get your DD used to the stances, understanding when to use them, and receiving the ball well. The mentality you want to put in place is to "make strikes look like strikes".

I just read about receiving on NECC. Her AC, who is the one who talked to her, is supposed to be a "catching specialist," so hopefully he teaches the same thing.
