ok here we go , This was the first week we had a softball practice, WOW being a baseball coach for several years and going to a new park and given a team of 9-10-11-12-13-14 year old players, YEA ! what a mix and a scary one at that. Let's get to the scary one , One of my coaches is the six cups of coffee type! that believes he's training for the super bowl of girls softball to be held next Tuesday ( I know some of you know the type). He has coached several boys to winning baseball teams at other parks but here's the problem . We have 7 girls from 9-13 that have never thrown a ball correctly much less caught one "It's fall ball". I Know we should be working on fundamental's, fundamental's, and safety seeing the age group. By the time I had our Parent meeting he had taken the team running from drill to drill without any assistants from the other coaches we were drug along like beginner's with the exception of one of my assistants that was at his stepfather's funeral by the time we settled into one of the first drills the other coach and my self would look up and he was headed to the next drill station he made up along the way taking half the girls with him, trying not to raddle the Parents by throwing a hell bet fit (new coach new park here) myself "Head Coach ? and the other assistant were hanging on to get through the surprise ambush. remember 6+ coffee guy, by the time I'm putting out fires by # 1 Parent Meeting telling the parents they are not allowed on the field unless they have a release and invited, turning from helping a batter to see several lining up along third base ???? WOOOOh . I go over and tell them nicely Folk's I'm sorry you can't be on the field, they pointed to the 6-cups of coffee and said he told the to get ready for the next drill that we would be needed , I called out to "Coach 6-Cups " parents or anyone cannot be on this field without a release ? they were not happy with me ? . by the end of practice I was along with a coach that had been there for years beat. Stopping a fourteen year old from throwing to a catcher-catching without equipment on ???? . By the time the we finished hitting drills he had ran the team over by the back stop fence for a team meeting ! right in front of the parents ready to follow the pied piper too ? He begins to tell the players to respect their parents, clean their room, house work, home work and love the Lord, Now this gets good with mouths dropped open , 6-Cups starts telling the parents and players remember he's hanging on the fence. he's a successful business man with lots of God given possession's, that the only reason he's out there is not the game, not the parents, not the players is his love for Jesus , rolls off by telling them if they want to know Jesus they may ask him or his wife anytime for their assistants it's an "Alter Call" without catching a breath he plugs Their " Church " inviting everyone there and then rolls into a prayer with the same breath ( I was really looking forward to the prayer and getting out of church/there as soon as I could) . I will be having a Meeting Monday before our Tuesday practice for sure. I will be stopping this runaway train down before someone gets hurt. We as a Team will be slowing down getting back to basic's of fundamental softball skills separating these girls and running station drills to the level of their experience. I know some of you would say I should have stopped the high jacking but believe me it happen too fast and was unbelievable. I left the Park knowing I just saw a Medicine Man, Six-Cups of Coffee and a Street Preacher at his best with players and parents mesmerized. Monday is a new day that Medicine show won't be repeated you can count on that . Trying to Stop it in it's tracks would have caused more Park Drama than a new coach needs along with the Park. Monday I may be looking for a new coach anyone Interested ?
