IMHO...if a batter heads in the direction of her own dugout immediately after having struck out, by one or more steps, she has conceded that she's out and no longer should have the option to run towards first.

But by rule in softball, she is allowed to. Just because you disagree does not make it any less so.
And if the was Major League Baseball, you would almost be correct.
