North winning streak snapped by South in battle of top teams

While South Forsyth stays in first place, North fell to third in Region 6

South Forsyth softball earned more control of Region 6 with a 6-0 shutout over county rival North Forsyth on Monday night. The contest between the region's top two teams was rescheduled from Saturday due to unfavorable weather conditions.

South (17-3, 13-1 Region 6-AAAAAA) led the game 4-0 when starting pitcher Katherine Huey helped out at the plate with a home run to left-center, scoring Jordyn Harris as well to end the game's scoring. Harris put up impressive hitting numbers, much as the sophomore has all season, going 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and two steals.

“(Jordyn) plays with a lot of confidence. She's just a quick person. She's aggressive. Sometimes you have to actually ask her to settle down, as a coach, but I'd always rather have that than trying to get someone up and ready to go,” South coach Ronnie Davis said.

Harris made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when she lead off with a single, then stole two bags before coming home on a wild pitch.

On the mound, Huey scattered eight hits and struck out five batters while only walking one.

“The one thing is, we only walked one batter. When you can win the battle of walks, and unearned runs, it gives you a good chance to win. It helps when you've got (Katherine) really well on the mound,” Davis said.

North (19-6, 12-4) fell behind Lambert into third place in the region standings with just two games left on its schedule, but head coach Bud Henderson felt like his team could take positives from the game. The Lady Raiders, who fell to South at home 10-0 on Sept. 1, were in the midst of a nine-game winning streak heading into Monday.

“Ronnie has a great team and a great pitcher. She moves it inside and outside so well. We played harder than we have against her in three years. We might be taking baby steps against them a little bit, but we're coming around,” Henderson said. “We can take something positive from this. We played a clean game, had two small errors that cost us a run, but it was clean. They were just a better team than us tonight.”

North pitcher Sarah King allowed six hits and three walks against five strikeouts, while North had two errors. The Lady Raiders' Hayley Simpson, Bella Caracciolo and Peyton Martin each had multi-hit games, with Martin doubling late in the game.

Jordin Englar and Emily Harris each had doubles for South.

Jordyn Harris opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when she singled to bring home Emily Harris from second, then scored herself off an error when the ball was errantly thrown down the third base line. Emily Thompson got an RBI in the fourth grounding out, scoring Lauren Bacarri.
