I thought hook slides were dsigned to get base with arm/hand?

No. A hook slide is something that's almost never actually done anymore. It's sliding past the base and hooking it with the trailing foot.

See: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hook slide

Sliding past the base and grabbing it with the hand isn't a hook slide, though you'll see some people call it that.

I can't say I followed all that, but I'll take a stab at the answer ...

Coach your catchers/fielders this way:

Do you have the ball?
YES -- Tag the runner.
NO -- Do not get between the runner and the bag/base.

Pretty easy.
Couldn’t have said it better. Everyone make the obstruction rule so hard. It is really very simple.

If you want to take as much judgement out of obstruction at the plat I would suggest we add a runners lane the same as the one at first base. If the catcher enters it without the ball while the runner is in it, automatic obstruction, if not play on. I would suggest it's the last 20 feet to the plate.
