A good pickup pitcher is not going to make the other players on the team better, but defensively the number of strikeouts should go up, the number of walks should go down, the WHIP should go down, batters should see less favorable counts, and fewer balls should be hit off the "sweet spot" of the bat. All of these things add up to a much better chance of the team being successful. There are a lot of A-level teams who would quickly become B-level if they lost their ACE pitcher, and there are a lot of B-level teams who could compete at A-level if they added an ACE.

If their confidence is boosted with one pitcher over another would they play better thus making them better or more effective? Mental

A good player needs to be confident in her own abilities regardless of who is pitching. Confidence in a particular pitcher is lost when she is not in the circle.

A leader is someone who through deeds or attitude instills confidence in a group which raises the level of performance of that group. Such is the case when the ace is in the circle. Are the other players magically transformed into better players? Of course not. Great leaders like great coaches will bring out the best in each individual. It is a common phenomenon that can be witnessed the ball field, in the board room, and the battlefield.

One of my coaches used to say, "Leadership is a bases loaded double."

To your point, confidence is not binary. There are many levels of confidence and for most players it increases when you have an exceptional player in the lineup. Is anyone seriously suggesting that if you let Monica Abbott or another stud pitch for any college team that the regular players would not raise their level of play?

Exactly my point-if you think otherwise you need to simply ask female athletes-not all but a majority will say if they feel good/confident they raise the level of their play and that confidence is just as much as their faith in themselves as it is in their faith in those around them. Girls raise and lower the level of play as a group vs alienating an individual. Its basic female pysch-look it up.

Flame all u want now but this is something that has been long studied outside of softball and was in most my textbooks and studies in college. Its been proven time and again vs ones perceptions.

If you don't think the confidence in a female team mates abilities doesn't impact an individuals personal confidence and play then you are of the opposite opinion of the majority as well as mental sciences.

In short bringing in an ace that the defense BELIEVES in does boost the abilities of the defense (as well as the offense for that matter)

Some of us are young......and well educated in certain subjects.

Personal theories are not documented in books and used to educate in our colleges.

Let's not use theories on female psyche to support one's position. It puts them in a box. There is significant variances and overlap in individuals. I could post here many many comments from men who say the same thing, and also surveys of male and female HS and college athletes point to overwhelming similarities about how feeling good or confident helps performance. Let's not go on what happened when we, the old timers grew up and all the baggage society brings with them.

Everyone and everything is in some imaginary box of some sort. Some people wring their hands and use it as an excuse for any adversity they face. That way when they fail it is never their fault. Someone else is always to blame.

Conversely others attack life doing whatever it takes to be successful despite all adversity real or not. Imaginary boxes do not hold people back. Rather it is those who relentlessly promote a victim mentality due to their own baggage and failures that do the real damage.
