Hey if a kid is walked and after getting to first he steps off as if he was running through first base but turns, toward foul territory if they are tagged are they out. Baseball or softball.

This isn't an out in almost any baseball or softball code.

For most all of them a walked batter is afforded the same right to overrun first base- and protection from being tagged out- that any other batter-runner is afforded. They may overrun first base just the same way as they would on a batted ball.

One exception is for high school baseball played under NFHS rules. They have an interpretation that a walked batter may NOT overrun first base and be protected from a tag. Under their rules, the play described would be an out.

To the best of my knowledge, high school baseball is the lone exception. All others I'm aware of, both for baseball and softball, allow any batter-runner- no matter how they became a batter-runner- to overrun first base.

In HS baseball one cannot over run first base after a walk--he can be tagged out.
