I like to think, when I read things like this, that maybe...maybe...something else happened not described???....like, before coming to rest on the plate, the ball hit the batter in the batter's box, or the ball hit the bat twice, or the catcher touched the ball (imperceptibly to the observer) in foul territory....

But I've seen enough to know that maybe he/she just got it wrong.

Well...i keep saying this,
Doesnt matter what the rules are...
the umpire is always right.

Best thing on the field is
~Play the ball.
~Finish the play.
Let the umpire figure out what they want to do.
Sometimes the play can influence the outcome.

I've been umpiring both baseball and softball since 1997, and I can honestly say the next time I see a batted ball end up sitting on home plate will be the first.

I would say an umpire who calls the ball foul BECAUSE it is sitting on home plate "dumb", lacking professional knowledge of his craft, and I really don't care what you think of my opinion.
