Batted ball hits batter

NCAA/BYU game yesterday - Batter hits the ball off the plate where it bounces and caroms off her knee and ball lands (I think) in fair territory. she walks off the injury, thinking its a foul but is thrown out at 1B. (Runner on 1B ran to 2B on the play and was allowed to remain.)

was this the right call? if it landed foul would it have been different?

I thought it was a dead ball because the batter hit herself while still standing in the box

If the umpires saw it it should have been a dead ball, but if they did not see it hit the batter and the ball was in fair territory it is a fair live ball.
