i'm curious what some of you have your 3rd baseman do when there's a throw from the catcher to 3rd and the ss is covering, and when there is a rundown situation? i'm talking first year 12u.

well at 14 the 3rd baseman ducked. but depending on the lead of the runner. the 3rd baseman caught it and just stuck her hand out and tug her. During rundowns our 3rd baseman ducks so ss gets it. After ss either runs past 3rd baseman or throws the ball, the 3rd baseman gets up to cover 3rd for the throw back.
Our HS team has 3rd duck to her left if she is hugging the line and peels behind the SS in case of a rundown. if she is off the line she still crouches and then goes for the back up. This is on a straight steal cover by SS. Things change for a pick at 3rd.
3rd base either ducks as the ball is thrown, or moves towards the pitcher. She then goes to home and covers behind the catcher, and joins in depending on the run down situation. You would also have first base at home and left field backing up short. Catcher would always stay in the middle once she's got rid of the ball, but far enough away so that the runner can't grab her for interference.
