Friday in a State tournament in Alabama, there was a situation that made me scratch my head. Bases loaded with two outs, a ground ball is hit toward the 3b, her momentum pulls her away from the bag. She fields the ball and tags the runner that was coming from second for the third out of the inning.
The home plate umpire turns to the press box tower and motioned for them to count the run. When the score came up on the scoreboard, every one just thought a kid or something upstairs put the score up wrong. A tournament official came down and stopped the game and questioned the ump about the run.
The ump explained that it was a "timing" call and the run crossed the plate before the tag was applied. and they left the run on the board. Our coach is a chicken $%&t, and didn't protest of throw a fit. I would have gotten ejected in about 30 seconds.
The ump said it was a force and the bag had to be touched for the out to be made and the run not count.
A force out is when a runner must vacate a base because of a runner coming from another base. the out can be made with a tag or touching the bag.
I feel stupid posting this, but can someone site in a rule book the correct ruling so I can email it to tournament official. He just stood there with a dumb look on his face and didn't know what to do.
