Yeah, I don't get it. Does he go home with a sense of accomplishment when he intimidates 9 and 10-year-old girls?

(The sad thing is that the head coach of this team is even worse.)

Sounds like a great way to get new players to fall in love with the game [/sarcasm]

If it's any consolation, things tend to mellow out in the years ahead.

He is absolutely wrong. I can guarantee he wouldn't stand there if my oldest dd was trucking down the line. She made a name for herself when an opponent was doing that the whole first couple innings. So we're in the 3rd inning, and the blue still wouldn't correct her after repeated requests. My DD was up, this girl did it again and purposely blocked the baseline with no play in her area or coming to her...BOOM!!!
It looked like a car wreck. Lol
That girl went flying backwards, and DD took 2nd. That was the last time she pulled that crap... The opposing team was screaming of course.... Blue said incidental contact. Lol
Incidental my a$$... DD steam rolled her. Lol

This is the odd ball stuff you hear about in softball that just does not seem to happen in baseball. First D3K when catcher peeled back to throw from foul territory the first baseman would go to set up on the outside of the base and put his spikes right down on that coaches foot and that would be the last time he stood there. Sometimes you just have to police the game as the situation dictates...he has no business being that close to the bag

One first base coach in DD's league (ASA/USA Softball League, 10U rec) is so close to the field that he stands with the side of his foot touching the safety bag and he won't move.

So on a D3K, the ball has squirted up the first base line a little, the 1B would normally set up for the catch on the safety bag because the throw is coming from foul territory. But because the coach isn't moving, 1B instead stays in fair territory and C has to throw over the runner's head or in the runner's path.

On wide throws, or pop-ups in foul territory near first base, coach doesn't move, either. Some girls would rather pull up short then run into him and they miss some plays that they'd make if the coach wasn't right there.

This coach insists that he can set up where he wants (and he seems to play dumb when it's suggested that his position has any effect on 1B's ability to make plays).

So, can the ump call interference, or does there have to be contact between the coach and 1B for the call to be made?

Crock of bull.

The coach's boxes are 8' off the line. Like the batter's box, 3' lane and every other line on the field, they exist whether marked or not.

The coach must be in the box prior to the pitch in all associations. The umpire should tell the coach to get in the box or leave the field and if he will not do that, he is ejected. And if you have umpires who will not do that, I suggest you find new umpires.

The umpire needs to control the field of play and direct the base coach to back away from the line. This is a player safety issue and most umpires vigorously enforce this rule. You do not need to be in the actual coaches box, just respect the distance from home plate and the baseline. If he refuses he view the game from the parking lot.

Agree! Coaches like that just send them away ...

Sorry, but this made me laugh. Are you sure you didn't mean to put your [/sarcasm] tag at the end of this line?? :)

I know you know this, but this could (should??) just as easily get your daughter tossed for malicious contact.

Picture the big "tough guy" bully standing right on the bag refusing to move with a smerk on her face, daring anyone to "do something about it"
I don't like bullies, and neither do my dd's. We will and usually do "something about it"!!!
If you (or anyone) doesn't like it... don't be a bully and we'll get along great
DD was not tossed, BTW and the bully girl didn't pull that crap again... at least not against us

Too bad the coach (or ump?) didn't so his/her job and correctly position the 1B player. If you want to take care of it yourself by having your daughter barrel her over instead, have at it. I'm just pointing out that that could result in your daughter getting tossed for malicious contact.

the ump can't and shouldn't "position a player" ... players can play where ever they chose ... however, and of course, the ump should administer all rules correctly ... thats his/her job and thats what they are paid for ... not coaching
