Some parting thoughts/mental cues for this student on how to achieve more spin on her drop......Less velocity on her change......and improve her I/R mechanics for speed and spin........

Cape Cod Mass.
I have video of a lot of high school pitchers who look OK at 9:00, open, hand on the side of the ball (most could use a little more elbow flex), but then they start to square up the shoulders too early and lock themselves out of a strong IR move into release. They then end up with a push release. They are accustomed to using the deltoid to power the pitch and fall back into that pattern every time. BM nailed it.

BoardMember,
I was playing around with that knuckle-forward change last night. It ended up as a drop and your video clip explained why. Looking forward to trying it again with a better cue. As I recall, the thumb comes off last?

Thanks,
Ken

Yes Ken, the thumb acts slightly as a "pusher".........

Remember also with this particular change, we have to "kill everything. Kill any core torque in the hips/shoulders. Kill the back leg......And "lock the wrist up" in a dorsi-flexed position and stop the elbow AT the side to kill the I/R.......You should have to lift the crap outta this pitch by snapping the forearm UP just to get it to reach the plate.........

Performed correctly.......The bottom will fall out of this pitch.........

I call this "Pulling the String".........

Here, I'm exaggerating the feeling of "Pulling Back on the String" for the student........

After seeing me exaggerate the motion.........She began to get it.........
