Well that was entertaining, but at least it eventually lead to something usable for the OP. This...

Years ago (long before the "torso" guys had arrived at hitting forums elsewhere, and eventually here) I started telling my hitters to, "Hit the ball with your rear hip" to help them get their "eyes" on timing the ball with proper body parts (or location, so if someone wants to say "torso" so be it...it's not the word, it's the concept), and not with the shoulders and/or hands as most developing hitters starting out try to do.

I too am stepping out of this battlefield thread, and hope all come away with all of their body parts needed to hit...regardless of what anyone's able to see or not.

Best wishes, and good luck to all,
MB -

MB, I have used your cue of hitting the ball with the rear hip with the goal of using the body/torso to time the ball. It's a good cue ... it works.

Over time I replaced the notion of a hip-engine with the notion of a torso-engine. I want the ball timed with the "walk-away-from-the-hands" like separation that Hosmer describes below. I want this action for the torso to be used to adduct/pull the upper rear arm 'in a turn' (corner creation) ... somewhat similar to the initial action of throwing a punch. This action builds the concept of being 'short' into the swing. When I teach a kid to use their torso to adduct 'in a turn' I never have to tell them again to be 'short'.

In my opinion, timing the ball with separation is what allows a hitter to adjust to different pitch speeds. I don't want to get to a certain position and hold it there. I want to be dynamic and explosive. Timing is critical.

NOTE: When I still played I used to tell people that I timed the ball with my hands. That wasn't completely accurate... But as I started learning these other concepts, I better understood what I felt those many years ago.

Cannon. The op hasn't replied once?! Think this was just a pirate thread. An HI ploy to get business. But it was derailed. :)

Sorry it took me a while to reply. No pirate thread. I appreciate the advice and have been working on her not dropping the hands and falling more on the stride and getting her chest over the plate more which is needed if you don't drop the hands. Dropping the hands happens because you don't get chest over.

Hey guys, I was reading through this thread and kept hearing "turn the box" and I have no idea what that means. Which I was never big in sports to begin with but my daughter is and I'm trying to help her out. I tried googling this term and couldn't find anything relative. Any chance you guys can explain to me what that is and if its good or bad? or link me a thread where it talks about it? Thanks in advance for any info.

The box is the shape formed by the arms. Some talk triangle. I like pentagon. LOL Someone with much more knowledge should soon chime in!
