Not to distract or confuse anyone but for clarification. Is it safe to say the 1st step in training the rear leg is to get the front leg out of the way(IE. pelvis open)?

I can agree with this. The coil needs to be a very specific feeling/movement of trying to wrap the rear glute around the rear leg. The front side is not to be used. If it ends up "getting in the way" then fine, but if you want as tightly wound coil as possible you should eliminate the use of the front edge of the body. The front side is more or less an outrigger.

Buttermaker,

I look at the axis starting with the back leg and then shifting to the front hip/leg. I think the backside is the most important axis it sets up the axis of the hands. I believe that if you think of the front hip/leg as the axis from the start of the swing the hand pivot point is compromised and you will more then likely end up on the front leg to much.

I think the front leg does play a role. It is relaxed and then the thigh/quad contract very quickly "caused" by the back hip/leg. Meaning if you relax the front leg and use the backside correctly the front hip/leg is then used correctly as a direct result of the back leg action.

Although, Like I mentioned I think the axis can and does shift during the swing. It starts out as the back hip being the axis.

Not here.
That's the Elvis move, right? If the front side doesnt get in the way, one can't do the Elvis move.

Good luck with that...Thinking about a ground up swing is a slowwwwwww swing. If it works for your DD then OK good. Good hitters don't do or think about 'doing the Elvis move'.

Can you possibly be mixing up AXIS (pivot point) with WEIGHT. Also, I believe the weight shifts from the rear to the middle during the swing. The swing swifts the weight. Just not to the front leg. Front leg is and should be for balance only. JMHO.

I'll disagree. First 'step' is training rear leg usage only. Then, if we are talking 'steps' 2nd step, I'd have to say adding in momentum.

I want the front hip first getting in the way so that it must get out of the way
Style verses an absolute. Not all hitters will do this. Some hitters remain open, never closing(hips in the way) so, they never need to get out of the way in the first place.
