With sound blocking skills the ball will always be in front, scoop it up, couple steps/shuffle forward and you are well clear in front of the plate 1B is stretched out inside the bag and it's an easy out.
With mediocre blocking skills the ball trickles behind you, scoop it up, take a few steps into foul territory, you are well clear in foul territory, 1B stretched out in foul territory easy out.
With poor blocking skills ball is at the backstop and you are throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

Sometimes even the best blocking catchers have balls get by them. I don't know about everyone else, but nearly all of the fields we play on have holes and mounds around home plate. Sometimes the plate is an inch above grade, sometimes it's below. Frustrating to watch a sound catcher have a ball bounce over her head.

For the most part, a D3K should not be a panic situation for an experienced and competent catcher, or an experienced and competent 1B. Generally speaking, it's an easy out. That said, strange things happen on the ball field, and sometimes things don't go as planned. Players need to practice as many different scenarios as they can - including scramble plays. Game experience helps, too.

This is exactly what I do as a catcher is yell inside or outside so the first baseman knows where to setup on a dropped strike 3. My backup knows to do the same when she's playing and I'm at first (I play there occasionally. I'm not very good at the position, but can play there in a pinch).
