Can anyone relay their experience with playing with out of town teams?

Specifically 2.5 hours or further away, how did you make it work for you and your family? What was your childs thoughts and how did they take it? Were you a rostered player or just a guest? If just a guest how did fees work?

We play on a team 3 hrs away. We go for practice once a week on Sunday afternoons. It’s been great. It’s an easy drive with 4 lane interstate the entire way.

DD is fully rostered and treated just like any other kid. The biggest challenge is keeping up with other practices. The team practices three times per week and we only go once. So that means we have to work on our own to get the reps that other kids on the team are getting. I have some friends who have let DD practice with them a couple of times just to help get those reps.

It’s not easy, it’s a bog commitment and trust from both sides, but it’s worked great so far. We love the team, coaches and parents.

We live in Texas. My daughter played for an organization based out of Georgia. The team had girls from other states that also played on the team so it was an eclectic mix of girls from different regions of the country. Before the summer season began, there was a mandatory Sat/Sun practice the 2 weekends before the first tournament of the summer so that the girls could practice with each other, learn the coaches signals, etc. When the season kicked off, we normally would get to the tournament the Thursday before the tournament so that the team could have a practice and get some hitting in. At the end of the weekend, everyone would go their separate way and then meet up again the next weekend in whatever city for the next tournament. The team played a limited fall ball schedule but didn't play a cross country schedule. My daughter usually only made one fall ball tournament as she was usually playing basketball and volleyball for her high school. During the summer season, the team had sponsors that paid for the girls hotel rooms for the various tournaments. They also provided uniforms, bats, batting helmets, cleats and catching gear for the catchers. They also occasionally provided airfare for certain tournaments but that was not the norm. The parents had to pay for their own airfare, hotels, rental cars and meals for themselves. It definitely wasn't cheap but I would do it all over again in a heat beat if given the chance. I would say that playing for this particular organization helped prepare my daughter for college. She is now starting her junior year at an SEC school and it is starting to hit me that I only have 2 years left to watch her play.

I know of at least 3 girls from the Houston area that play for the GA Firecrackers. I have often wondered how the logistics worked out for the families and how they can afford to travel out of state for 6 tourneys in the summer. If the team has sponsorship that helps big time.

We drive 3 hrs one way to my daughter's travel team. Organization is top notch. Coaching is beyond excellent. Parent drama is near zero. We can afford it and we are invested as a family and aren't not doing other things in order to do this. Wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks again for everyones experiences.

At this time Im thinking we're going to pass on an opportunity because largely its going to overextend us. Honestly if we wait another year then there wont be any hinderances. Doesnt help us this year however but after hearing some of what she heard at her workout she knows where she wants to go as soon as it does works. So now how to keep her that motivated until this time next year lol

We did 2.5hrs last year, 3hr this year, each way. The org is great and it is worth the travel. The girls bond at practice and social media. No issues here. 16U team.
