How does your TB team feel about players playing pickup for other teams?

I'd be curious to know if the those coaches that don't "allow" their players to guest-play for another team have any issue with using guest-players themselves when needed?

When I was coaching TB, we never said no when one of our girls was asked to guest-play. We definitely wanted to know know when it was happening, and obviously it couldn't conflict with our own schedule, but other than that go get the reps! We also knew that we would find ourselves in need of adding a guest player or two to our roster on occasion...would be a bit hypocritical to not allow our players to do it while we used guest-players.

This week, dd11 was asked by a team in another state to guest play as catcher in a tournament in an organization we don’t play in. One of her teachers is related to that team’s coach. DD’s team has nothing going on this weekend (no tournaments even scheduled for two more weeks but that’s a different story). Dd really wanted to play, but I thought I should clear it with her TB coaches, though. They said the TB organization discourages it. HC’s rationale is that if she’s injured, then they’ll be out a player. (To me, if they’re worried about injuries, they should be more concerned about basketball than playing for another team. My kids have more basketball-related injuries than softball/baseball/football/track put together.)

Anyway, I was wondering what your TB teams’ philosophies were. Dd was very honored by the request and needed the playing time because her team hasn’t played a game since November. She’s still disgruntled, lol.

Discouraging it does not mean that it is banned. If nothing was said at tryouts prior to accepting a position on a team, then I would tell the coach that she is going. Just let him know that it is important to her development to get as many reps and game-playing situations in as possible.

In my experience they have absolutely no problem using guest players and are genuinely shocked when they are told "No".

Have been Coaching for 15+ years and we've never had a no guesting policy... If your team isn't playing much by all means get some reps. Here is the question to me, how much playing time is enough? We're in FL and take a month off middle of December till Middle of January. Also a month middle of July till middle of August. Play every other weekend the rest of the year, I would think that would be enough reps/playing time (possible exception of #3/4 Pitcher, #12 player on a roster)? I only let my daughter guest once/twice a year, because I feel that is adequate playing Time for her development (we are first year 12u team). Curious of thoughts from everyone, cause we have half our team guesting almost every off weekend. Sometimes I believe it's a little much

I agree. We finish up in July with a world series around here, then the middle school feeder stuff starts pretty much right away. We can't start tournaments til Oct because of school ball. But the girls who play school ball have been playing from early March all the way through whenever the last tournament is in November probably around here. Our last one of 2017 was in December. We take Dec off, then winter workouts start in January. My DD doesn't have any interest in school ball but it applies to almost every other girl on our team. They get Dec off and that's about it. It seems like a bit much to me.

Thankfully DD's organization has no problem with guest playing. As long as it doesn't interfere with her TB team stuff they encourage getting game reps. The last 3 years she probably guest played on average of 12-15 games a year for teams outside of her organization. She has never mentioned any thoughts of leaving for a team that she guested for, she just loves to play.

Here we have to have a copy of the roster signed by the coach saying they have permission to play. Never been an issue, I have a roster that gets copied for each pickup tournament.
