First practice is today. We are in the smallest division in Indiana. Enrollment is just under 300 and we have 20 players this year. First time in a decade we will support a Varsity and JV.

Very excited about the potential this season. We have four seniors signed to play at small schools next year. Our talent level has not been this high for a long time.

Yep, as a guy who grew up in east TX where there was a school our size every 25 miles, it was eye opening. Our rivals back home were 5 and 20 miles away. Here they are 50 and 70 miles away. Unfortunately, they dont field softball teams.

Where were you when in MT?
Glendive. My wife is from there and still has family there. My boys like to go out to their aunt's place up on Fort Peck.

Holy cow! I knew it's like that, but it's still mind boggling to hear.
For more perspective my DD’s travel team, based in Seattle, had a pitcher from western Montana play with them the last two seasons. Her parents told me it was a shorter drive to Seattle than it was to eastern Montana where their son played baseball.

Glendive is one of the Class A schools we do a home and home with. I love when we get to play on Dawson CC's field. Not so much playing on Glendive's rec fields.

Spent many a day on that lake, and hope to spend many more! I'm about 20 miles of there.

Kind of depressing when you can start out driving in the morning, drive all day, stop for the evening and you're still in the same state.

Thanks! I've lurked here for awhile. I'm in the East, and you aren't kidding about the long bus rides. We're Class B and our closest conference opponent is 260 miles away. We have a handful of Class A teams that are a bit more manageable. They're "only" 125 to 200 miles away. :D

I have to laugh. My first few years in college, I worked in a call center that staffed the 800# for large electronic companies. Mainly, we just directed people to their nearest service center for repairs (yeah, back when THAT was a thing!).

We looked them up by zip code (state of the art back then!). People would call from New York City and we would tell them "Johnny's TV Shop shows as being .3 miles from you." They would scream and yell, "That's the other side of the known galaxy!" Then somebody from Montana would call. "The nearest service center is Next Door TV Repairs. It is 800 miles away in South Dakota." The caller almost always said, "That's awesome! I'm already going to be headed into town tomorrow to get groceries!"

First game of the season this afternoon. 13 girls which is all that came out in a school of about 500. DD is freshman P and will probably see a pretty heavy load this year. Anxious, but excited. She's put in a lot of work.

I think one of the best things to do at this age level is go to games. College games to see how far you might can go, and rec / middle school to see how far you've come to get to this point.

I don't think she's figured out yet that all the practices and lessons and everything is just so I can spend as much time with her as possible. She enjoys the game and I'm excited to see what's possible in this next 4 years, either way we'll enjoy the ride.
