wouldn't they need to be 2018's to sign an NLI this fall?

I don't like this early recruiting BS. heck, they change a lot just from grades 9-12!

I was making a comparison to the # of 2018 girls who actually signed a NLI to the # of players who have "committed" to this college as 2020's and other ages. This school has been doing this for awhile - the percentage of commits they make that end up as actually signed players is very low. And they are not alone.

The real shame is that a lot of these players are unsurprisingly very recruitable talent. And at some point they will be back in the recruiting pool with their parents talking about "Not the right fit" or "decided to go somewhere else" which is code for the coaches telling them that at best they are walk-ons or not to bother coming if they want to play.

And yes this early recruiting is BS. I like riseball's idea - if you want to have a girl commit early lets make it binding on the college side. That would make a huge difference.

I would double down on that and say that if the coach leaves the player is allowed to as well without restriction (before or after the player enrolls at the university).

I followed the recruiting before Flo took everything undercover and charged for it. I saw schools with huge numbers of verbals, but nothing outrageous for a single class. I’ve known a few kids that for various reasons never signed (coaching changes, talent drop off). I saw Tennessee sign a huge number of kids one year. If you added the incoming class with current roster minus seniors it would have been well over 30. Hopefully the four year deals slowed some of that down.

I’d say the vast majority of kids who verbal DO sign. Even with coaching changes some schools require that the new coach honor previous verbals. I think a far greater issue than schools dropping verbals is girls signing and washing out after a year because they had no idea what they were getting into.
