The Five-Year Rule Waiver is only available when needed to complete the 4 seasons of competition, so a 6th year can only be added if they lost more than 1 year.

We are basically saying the same thing here. A Medical Redshirt approved by the NCAA does not count as a year of participation.

Watching the 2016 Softball WCWS, the announcers mentioned that one of the Auburn infielders, who was a 5th year Senior, could have petitioned for a Medical Redshirt during the 2016 season, as she had missed the majority of the 2016 season recovering from an ACL surgery following her 4th year Junior year of eligibility. She had to sit out a season and redshirt, after transferring from another NCAA Division 1 program between her Freshman and Sophomore year.

The 5th year Senior ended up joining the Auburn team late in the season, and not petition for a medical redshirt, and played a big role in Auburn's runners up finish in the 2016 Softball WCWS.

Had she petitioned for a Medical Redshirt and had the Medical Redshirt been granted, we could have seen her playing this year as a 6th year Senior.
