It’s been building for some time, but had a Senior on DD’s HS team quit in the middle of the game last night…with two games left in the regular season. I was watching the game along the LF fence and someone said, hey, isn’t that X walking away from the field. But it gets better…

X and one of her parents came back after the “chalk talk” at the end of the game. They confronted the coaches with the AD in tow. Was a heated conversation that seemed to be going on way too long and one the assistant coaches and the parent almost came to blows with the AD stepping in between. It was on display for most to see and for her teammates who were busy cleaning up the field, etc.

This is the second girl on the team to quit. The previous one quit immediately before a game a couple weeks ago. Took her jersey off just after the national anthem, threw it down, and walked away. Another Senior.

We need more details on both of these. Seniors quitting, especially if the coach is new or just not liked, isn't unusual, but quitting at/during games certainly is.

What can we do to deescalate? IDK.
Get thicker skin is what I would answer. Like a retail worker has to do. Try to be less offended. Brush it off and forget about it. People in all kinds of professions have to deal with rude people. Just be one of them.

Obviously it's not cool for someone to say that to you but realistically, someone saying "That's terrible" is not the end of the world. If something like "that's terrible" offends you, how do you survive driving in traffic? Lol.... We have to deal with rude inconsiderate people every day from the guy at the grocery store who has 25 items in the 15 item or less line to the lady that swings in front of you for that prime parking spot. Just have to smile and move on because there is no way we can re-train all of the rudeness out of people these days. That horse is out of the barn.

In my neck of the woods, retail establishments are having problems getting employees because people don't want to deal with rude customers.

lol. And we wonder why we can't find more umpires. Good grief.
Look I can tell you are not used to out of the box thinking. it's a foreign concept to you. But do you really think you can retrain all of the idiots out there? Talk about LOL!!!!!!!! You live in a world of rainbows and unicorns if you think the answer is to retrain all of the rude people. That's been tried and according to the umps here, it gets worse every year. So your answer is to continue to do the same thing that's been done the last 20 years without success? You remember the definition of insanity? Lol......

The most realistic step is to retrain the umpires to be less offended. I didn't say that's how it should be, but realistically, that's the only way to accomplish what he asked about.

Lol....you got proof of that statement? The lack of retail workers has numerous factors involved, don't try to paint a narrative by acting like there's only one factor.

I had a girl on my 12U team back in 2017 walkout in the middle of a tournament. Her dad was my assistant coach, but he couldn't be there that day. Admittedly, the team stunk, but we were getting better every weekend. The problem was the AC and daughter caused us to lose a game the prior weekend because he took her home during a long game break and pitched her in a LL game and then lied about his whereabouts. When I found out the truth during the week, I had the HC sit her (I was the manager and in control of the team) for the first game. The mom approached me and asked if her daughter was being punished for missing the game the previous weekend, so I was honest and said yes. She had also missed practice that week, so it was a twofold reason. We wound up having to use her as a pitcher in the game, so she wasn't even punished for a full game.

In between games, I am walking with the girls to the next field when I see said player and mom get in their car and drive away. I called and texted both parents and never heard back from them again. Nothing, notta... My only sweet revenge was my younger daughter, who is 2 years younger than the player who left, faced her recently in a High School game. She struck her out three times on 9 pitches and hit a home run off the other girl. The look on the dad's face was priceless.

As for retail workers, I was both a worker and a manager for a supermarket many years ago, and it was not fun. I had a customer throw a bag of frozen peas at one of my other managers because they wouldn't take it back despite the fact it was a brand that had been discontinued three years earlier. Considering the fact I couldn't stand the other manager, I got a good chuckle from the incident.

No, but I read about an umpire quitting mid-game. No specifics, just coach was riding him so he up and left. Not sure why he didn’t eject, but it was a random FB post.

I was at an event where that happened (same event, maybe).

My understanding, from what I was told by others...Coach was one of the organizers of the event (maybe responsible for paying the umps), and is a prominent in 18U TB in So Cal. Coach had repeated issues with the ump in his game. The ump eventually got sick of it and walked off the field. The game continued with the catchers calling balls and strikes.

@CPEM was working games that day, and may have more insight from the ump side of the story.

It was a weird day. The event was an Alliance Qualifier, and was supposed to conclude with a tournament champion. When teams got to the point of clinching a berth, they left the event. No semi-final or championship games were played.
