There are worse things than taking strikes. There are worse things than striking out sometimes. There are even worse things than occasionally taking strike three.
Yeah worse thing is a coach who doesnt have an explaination for the things they say.

Given the go ahead on first strike allows the batter 2 chances of strikes to select what they like. No reason to split the odds by taking away a hittable 1st strike. Forcing the batter into a 50/50 on the second strike. With lousy umpiring and strikezones all over the place worsens situation. Then the 3rd strike usually a pitchers strike not what the batter wants but will have to make do
Doesnt make sense to take the bat out of the hands of a player who is up to bat.
Looking at the 3rd strike is the worst thing a batter can do.
Hands over control of the game. Does nothing to contribute. But there is a crowd who blame the umpire when it happens. Saying dd had a good eye. Yeah sure and a lousy batting average.

I hate the take sign, somehow the coach can predict the future? Trust the players, even if they can't hit very well, especially if they can't hit very well. They swing at a bad pitch? Coaching moment. They watch a good pitch go by? Coaching moment. Practice is for teaching the decision making skills that manifest themselves at the plate. 3-0 count? green light, but you should love it. Pitcher has thrown seven straight balls? Be ready for her to pipe one to "get the feel." Closest thing I had to a take sign when coaching was the fake bunt/pull back so I could see how the D was covering, if they wanted to swing away on that pitch after showing bunt, fine. The more you trust your players the more they will be engaged, and the faster they will improve. DD has played for and against a lot of control freak coaches, they aren't for her. She thrives when she can take responsibility for her actions, successful or disastrous.

As far as Gasso buying time for a gassed pitcher, she is elite, and is making decisions on a much higher level than any TB coach. Also, probably told all batters to be more selective before the inning started, but since all of those batters are fantastic and think "close enough, I'll go yard" is selective She may have felt the need to take matters into her own hands.

What does that mean? TB pitchers don’t get gassed? Softball is about run prevention along with run production...sometimes you have to sacrifice one a bit in order to greatly improve the other..
