Drop dead has bitten our team more than once. Ready for another? You couldn’t make this stuff up:bases loaded
Drop dead time under ten minutes opposing coach slowly strolls out to the mound then slowly back. Closer to 5 minutes now. Next pitch she rolls it on the ground!! No one knew what to do..next pitch rolled again this time the batter hits it fair ump immediately throws his hands in the air “dead ball dead ball“ both coaches go crazy after long discussion ump rules drop time rule game over end of discussion never got an explanation on why he called dead ball if he allowed the pitch why couldn’t he allow the hit?
True story

Well its illegal for the pitcher to purposely roll the ball on the ground, but, it is not a dead ball if the batter hits it. That is a slow pitch rule.

I always hated when there were only a few minutes left and the opposing team would call time out to bring in a new pitcher to eat up time.

But in slow pitch if the ump calls it illegal while in the air the batter has the option to hit it or let it go by...High arc 6and 12?
So the batter knows it’s a ball before the swing Which is fairly common in this case
Your right it should have been declared illegal before it was over the plate nothing was said and it’s fairly uncommon in fastpitch for a pitch to be declared illegal either way just a crappy way to try and kill off the time

Man I used to love slow pitch. A lot of good times now it’s fastpitch with my DD
Even More good memories I tend to whine but I’ve been around this game for close to 45 years never gets old

Almost every game we play out here in So Cal is no new or drop dead except for some elimination games or when they go to ITB if tied.

When you're winning :)
Funny thing, that backfired on other team. They took a 4-0 lead after one, we got a run in 2nd inning. The other team really dragged game out the next two innings, then we scored 4 runs in the bottom of the forth. They got up down 5-4 top 5 with 2 minutes left, we knew we won then.

I wonder what current rules would have been different if softball/baseball had originally been designed to be played with a clock. Can anybody think of anything off the top of their head?

At the very least no bracket play or championship game should ever be drop dead. I cannot recall the last time we entered a tournament where the title game wasn't 7 innings (run rule yes, but no time limit).

I'm not trying to tell you what to do but the more teams that avoid tournaments with the drop dead rule the fewer there will be.

Similar to nba, nhl, nfl regarding timeouts, in between quarters, etc. the clock would stop. You call timeout to change pitchers, the clock stops. In between innings, the clock stops.
