So the parent was the one doing the insisting..got it ;)

The hitter's comment to the mother was something like ... "see Mom, I've been trying to tell you."

Either way ... if a hitter, or parent of a hitter, buys into a level shoulder mentality ... then I politely show them the door. They have always returned, but I'm perfectly fine if they don't.

Why go to an instructor if you aren't going to listen..that makes no sense..

I agree.

I fully anticipate, and respect, that parents are involved. Because I expect parents to be involved, I welcome the parents to ask questions at any time during the hitting lesson. I am fairly tolerant in a parent having different thoughts ... but "level shoulders" is one of those differences where it is a complete waste of my time to continue forward.

So what are good drills for staying back and not lunging

So what are good drills for staying back and not lunging

I worked with a team tonight. The manager reminded me that one kid was a major lunger just a few weeks back. I had forgotten ... not a hint of lunge in her swing anymore. The team performs basic everyday drills. It wasn't the drills that fixed the issue ... more it was a focus on proper swing mechanics. Take care of the negative move ... of the positive move ... of arriving at a healthy swing launch orientation ... of initiating the swing with the torso engine (simply "making orange" works for many hitters) ... of using the hands ... and there will not be any lunging.

I asked the kid how she got rid of her lunging issue. She said she simply did what I said. All I've done is instruct three basic warm-up drills and applied points-of-emphasis that I believe are important.

I had her hit last night, she did better when I reminded her to keep her head behind ball. When I throw fast pitches she is ok, it's the slower ones she is having trouble with. Not sure if it's a timing thing or what

Timing is the most important thing in hitting. Great mechanics with poor timing won't be very successful. Great timing with mediocre mechanics will often do pretty well (to a point). All that said, there could be mechanical issues that are contributing to her being able to properly time her swing.

Again...Video?

No such thing as "great mechanics with poor timing". If the mechanics don't include the qualities leading to good timing, then the mechanics are not 'great'. The objective after all is to hit a moving ball. Folks need to get off of the tee and work off of a live arm more.

Fair enough. "Great" is probably on overstatement.

I've always had my DD and the girls I coach keep in mind that slow pitches fall downward because of gravity. If you adjust your swing path to a ball falling down more steeply you'll be able to drive the ball and not chop it. In extreme cases I've told players "golf that thing out of there". When the adjustment is made they usually stop beating the ball into the ground.
