These girls have struggled this season with finding a good rhythm. I've posted before about the coach and how challenging playing for her can be. Last weekend the girls had an overnight tourney and spent some time really talking things over. They were tired of always being compared to past state champ teams for this HS. They want to be their own team, with their own traditions. It was a good weekend (not necessarily softball wise) but rather for defining themselves.
This week they had 4 games. Monday they were down by 4 in the bottom of the 7th. They came back in grand fashion to score 7 runs and win the game. DD smoked a triple that scored the go ahead run! Each and every player played for each other and not themselves. It was an amazing thing to watch. Tuesday night they had a run a way game that was over in the 4th by run rule. Boring.
But last night...they had to play the #1 team in our state. This team has an ace pitcher who is really very, very good. DD's team was striking out right and left. DD got walked, got hit, sac bunted, bunted for a base hit and struck out after a 10 pitch at bat. So I was very proud of her. She is the only freshman on this team of all juniors and seniors. But I digress...the game lasted 11 innings. Both pitchers were amazing! Game was 0-0 going into the 11th. DD's team finally got a runner on in the top of the 11th. She got sacrified to 2nd. Stole 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored on a second wild pitch. It was amazing. DD's pitcher then went on to strike one out, got a little dribble to 3rd and a pop fly to center and they won. 1-0. Those girls dug deep and played for each other. I was so proud of each and every one of them!
Very emotional night for them...and then on the ride home the bus got stuck behind an accident on the highway. They were sitting not moving for 20 minutes when they found out one of the player's dads was involved in the accident. The highway was shut down and he had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance. They rallied around this player and prayed with her and hugged her the whole way home. Dad will be fine...but what a crazy night.
