Yeah, a lot of 'brave' bucket dads.
We need a DFP parents game. I'm sure FFS & CoachKevin will be volunteering to play 1B & 3B.:p

I said band-aide for a hitter that was struggling.

I didn't say my DD was struggling.. and I didn't say it was band-aide fix for any mechanical issue she might have. I said that the coach intended on using this approach in the game. This was a set play, fake the bunt and slam it pass the charging fielder. He had every girl on the team do this, made no difference if you were clean up or the number 3 hitter like my DD. All I said was I noticed an improvement in her swing when she tried this. I was wondering if anybody else noticed this with any other player before.. not that i wanted to incorporate it in her swing, but maybe I could take a portion of it (very subtle) and help improve her sequence.

Just so everybody else is aware.. the coach was teaching a fake bunt and "slash" or "slap", it was a fake bunt and "slam". Fake the bunt, pull back and full swing. I don't like it one bit... and for those saying it should be the defensive coaches responsibility to coach the corners to creep.. this is true, but it's still dangerous. But a kid gets caught up in the action and makes a poor decision to charge hard, it's a bad situation. I don't like it and I think it's uncalled for. As a coach I am not calling that play.. as a matter of fact I advised the 3rd baseman to back off before because one of my little kids come up and they think bunt. Little do they know she never bunts and pulls the ball a ton. I know this is not necessary.. but wouldn't be able to live with myself seeing somebody get seriously injured when I could of prevented it.

It saddens me to see Dinosaurs like you who still attach some kind of stigma to a 10 year old wearing a face mask.

The sooner you age out of our sport the better.

Good day.

Some parents talk about silly it was for an outfielder to wear a mask. My DD wears a mask in every position, both of us don't really care what scouts, other parents, players think. When she was 7 years old I threw her a pop up and she missed it, came down hit her glasses which gashed her brow wide open. She's worn a mask every since. Is she afraid of the ball, no, if you seen her play you would know that. But it's there in case of the freak accident.

Last year during qualifiers our center fielder (great fielder) was charging a high pop up hard when it got lost in the sun at the last second. It smashed her face in, we could hear the crack from the bleachers. The left side of her face was so swollen and discolored that they had the plastic surgeons take a look because they didn't think it would return to normal. She wears a mask (even in warm up) now and her parents aren't one of those that say how silly it is.

5Frames.. not sure why you would be saddened by seeing a girl in the outfield wearing a mask. For one thing you have no idea why they are wearing it.. could be prescribed by a doctor for all we know... also I've seen team organizations make it mandatory as well.

Heck, I see 12U teams with all of the outfielders wearing masks ... and yes, I personally find it sad. That said ... I am tolerant of your opinion ... just don't agree with it.

There is an element of danger in this game.

The game is competitive, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that people are going to be as competitive as possible within the confounds of the rules.

If folks find the game too dangerous, then reconsider playing it. Alternatively, work to change the rules.

Well ... I suppose that certain teams that have all of their kids wearing a mask may all have the same prescription by a doctor .

Certainly.. there is an element of danger in everything.. for example the other day I was walking down the road. A truck had it's right turn signal on, so I proceeded to cross the road, than the driver changed their mind and went straight through the intersection putting me in a dangerous position. The game can be dangerous enough without that "cat and mouse" tactic. Most sports are dangerous to a point.. and there are ways within the rules to put a player in a very vulnerable dangerous position. There's honor and respect in the game among the athletes that is not written in any rule. I believe this is a low down dirty play that puts the corners in a very vulnerable position in which they are unable to defend themselves... a minor ball coach should have more sense

Wait to you find yourself competing for a national berth ... the game gets even more competitive (i.e., dirty). Just saying that if you plan to compete with the big girls, then be prepared for more of what you may consider 'dirty'.

This seems to be more accepted in softball. I know when my daughter plays baseball, this earns the next batter a fastball to the ribs. PERIOD. Bunt 'n slash is considered super bush league. Should be even worse when the corners play 30 feet away from the batter.
^^^ This ^^^ Or the same batter one in the ribs if he misses on his/her first attempt (although "chin music" not hitting said batter sends the message as well...w/o stooping to just another level of play putting additional kids in jeopardy of injury).

MB ... the "fake bunt and slash" mechanic is fairly common in softball. You won't find competitive teams taking offense to an opponent executing this mechanic. The mechanic is used by top D1 programs. It's part of the game. What we have here are folks learning about the game ... and in time they will learn that this mechanic is simply part of the game.
