The torso performs a twisting like action. When dealing with young hitters that primarily 'turn' and are void of 'lateral tilt' (which many are), I find it helpful to temporarily isolate the movements. One of the cues I then use with hitters is "more tilt, less turn" ... with the intent of accentuating the 'lateral tilt' in their swing.

There is no question that the action of 'lateral tilting' resists the upper torso from being rotated. I believe even Mike Epstein explained that ... I believe decades ago.

Here's TM describing the upper gear in the two gear analogy as 'lateral tilt'. He has that portion of what he says here correct.

At no time does he say to laterally bend. You keep trying to insist lateral bend and lateral tilt are the same thing. They are not. Your use of video clips proves it. Then you say to practice turning the torso to the ball and then try to say lateral tilt prevents that. Go back to the drawing board and figure out how to tilt at the hip joint.

Tilting at the hip joint. He is resisting turning the torso forward. His rear leg is advancing him as he turns the barrel.

Put your cursor on the front hip, very front. Watch how much he sits.

Shawn, you truly are looking at his movement through the HI lens.. He only sits due to range of motion limitations.. IOW's why depend on timing of the move out in hopes the pitch will fall within the timing window.. Bonds pattern needs none of those dependencies...

Tilting at the hip joint, I see that. Do the hips look like they are tilting and the same angle as his shoulders? Looks like his shoulders are tilting more than his hips, prolly from the side bend.

As an aside, I stumbled on that whole presentation that Rich did, where that clip came from, and it really helped my understanding of all these things that have been discussed over the years. Not everything the way you guys do but it helped none the less...for anyone that may be interested...

Hips will not tilt all that much since the rear leg is turning forward at the same time. Shoulder will tilt more as the barrel gets turned. Pitch dependent of course.

Lateral bend is created by the rear leg turning as the torso tilts at the hip and as the torso resists from turning forward. The shoulder gets pulled down.

The action of lateral tilt (lateral side bend) significantly dampens the rotation of the upper torso (shoulder line) with that of the lower torso. It is part of a good athletic swing.

Not here.
Regarding the last video, do you believe this sequence here is correct? Pull-back, then laterally tilt, then rotate?

Just posted 'saying' and showing exactly what teacherman believes the correct sequence is. I honestly lost all respect for the tearcherman.
