Not me but a coach I know. There is a girl who has been on my DDs team whose nickname was/is Up. The coach would call out to her come on up. Get aggressive up. We need you up... Finally the plate ump calls time walks over to the dugout and says "you got a problem with me?" Coach is confused as he hasn't said a word to him. "I don't know what your talking about". " all game all I hear from you is come on ump, we need this ump... All sorts of things".

Coach starts laughing, the girls are giggling. Coach tells him I'm talking to the batter her name is Up.

For everyone's sake, I hope his eyesight was better than his hearing.

Couple weeks ago in a varsity HS game the plate ump tells my DD she is not allowed to turn around and make eye contact with him when she is asking if the pitch was outside, generally trying to find his zone.

She calls time turns and faces him and says can you show me that in the rules??

At my DS' baseball tournament today I visited the restroom between games. A sweaty umpire came busting through and barged his way past me into a stall. "Damn extra inning games. I sh&t myself."

3.6.15. Want to ask a question, ask. Any coach should know to teach the catcher to not turn around and ask about a pitch. And this is varsity HS? It could be seen as a confrontational move and an effort to show up the umpire. Any half-decent umpire will be more than happy to carry on an informative conversation with the catcher (other than providing some level of coaching) during the game as long as it is not made to seem that it is confrontation or too friendly.

BTW, she cannot call time

I don't disagree that a catcher should always discreetly and courteously interact with the plate umpire, but....any half-decent HS umpire should know that they shouldn't be making up rules arbitrarily.

During a game I'm watching my DD pitch at knee level to waist level hitting the corners. Umpire isn't calling anything but balls unless she puts it in a shoebox from waist to belly button dead center on the plate. I'm coaching. I walk down to third so I don't say anything. After the game umpire tells me he wanted to give the other team a chance to swing.

I should have said she asked for time, and the ump called time. I didn't figure that i had to be exact in every little detail, we are on "DiscussFastpitch", so i made the assumption that most people would understand the simplistic situation.

As to asking about location of pitch "if he considered it outside or low, etc etc," she did not physically stand up, turn around and face him, she turned her head sideways and asked.

I absolutely disagree with you about "Any coach should know to teach the catcher to not turn about and ask about a pitch"

My DD has A pretty easy going temperament, and makes great effort in establishing a mutual rapport with the officials, and has had very good success. In this instance the official was a little salty, so in return my DD was the same.

I do apologize for whatever I have done that you did feel the need to "SET ME STRAIGHT" now that you did, can we continue with the thread?

Regardless of the sport some officials take themselves way too seriously. If we could only get them to pay such close attention to IP's. :)

Runner on 1st base. Foul ball over our first base dugout. Next pitch is a single and runner at 1st goes to 3rd base and is standing on the bag. With play presumedly over, we motion to the plate umpire to throw him the ball that was foul. He motions to us to throw it to the catcher. As we are in the process of getting the ball to the catcher, the runner at 3rd breaks home and scores.

Our head coach argued the play was dead and why would he, the umpire, motion for the foul ball from the previous play? Umpire says and I quote "I can do two things at once".

WTF? Needless to say our coach got tossed and had to appeal to the AD just to be able to coach the second game.
