I'm just guessing but I think you were sitting a few rows in back of us behind home plate.

I believe that was a Saturday game, I was at the Friday game against Bellevue College, which my wife tells me is no longer a CC. We were supposed to go to the Saturday game with my DD's 12U travel team, Seattle Spice, but she had another commitment.

I wanted Bellevue to do well. They had two terrific plays on defense so it wasn't all bad, but they looked totally outclassed otherwise.

The weather is nice and my DDs want to go so I'll be at tonight's games as well.

So far in the Husky Fall Classic they are 5-0 and have outscored opponents 62-1.

And what exactly is the benefit for the Huskies from these games?

Riseball,

Arizona plays their whole fall seasons against Arizona JUCOs. Your question applies to the Wildcats too. I speculate that it gives Candrea a chance to look at the new walk-ons against their age class. But I dunno. Come Spring Candrea always plays a pretty tough schedule.

My point is that if you are outscoring your opponents 62-1 it has to be a pretty soft schedule. What is the benefit?

No, believe me. I agree with you. I don't understand either, I was speculating. Arizona has played two fall games so far and outscored their JUCO opponents something like 46-5. I saw AZ make a couple brief defensive substitutions, the new girls hit a few times, and a new hopeful freshman pitcher get rocked (she allowed 5 of the 6 runs, all hers were earned BTW). Dunno what Candrea can read from playing starters on defense. But it's pretty clear that unless the frosh pitcher improves a lot in the next 4 months, Arizona will have another weak season in the circle.

Saves money and time to play local. Juco games are convenient ways of getting more and diverse practices. Just as front toss can help, so can live but weak pitching. My guess, anyway.

My DD played at a juco in El Paso. So, she played a number of D1 teams (including Arizona) in fall ball. When she played D1, her college team played a few jucos in the fall. The games are basically friendlies.

The scores make the games look closer than they are. The D1 teams generally play only one or two of their starters. They don't start their big dog pitcher(s). Basically, it is the freshmen and sophomores of the D1 team playing the juco.

The score might be close, but there was no way the D1 teams were going to let the juco beat them. If the game gets close, then D1 put their best players in the game.

Fall ball is primarily a way for the coach to look at the new talent and to consider who might get moved up as a starter.
