There have been fascinating (to me anyway!) psychological studies about unconscious incompetence. This is where an individual doesn't know enough about a given skill or ability to even recognize that he/she is incompetent. If the father had known a little more, he wouldn't have placed his daughter in a situation she was not prepared for. The problem is, someone who is unconsciously incompetent and someone who is competent will both SAY that they are competent. In fact, the competent, even those quite confident in their ability, are less likely to extol their performance at a difficult skill because they likely know of someone who is even better and are aware that there is room for them to continue to improve.

This is called the Dunning–Kruger effect

What was their response? Were they in la la land or did he realize he was exaggerating the kid's skills?

Shawn

After the moving the mat back incident, I watched her pitch awhile and asked if she was good and loose, if she was "game ready". She said yes and I asked if this seemed to him like her normal pitching. He said that it was and asked what I clocked her at. I turned the gun around and showed him. Between that and the whole distance thing they quickly realized they were out of their league. Fortunately they live in a neighboring community so they didn't drive too far and they thanked me for the opportunity.

I'm still just shaking my head at a 14YO moving the pitching mat to 35'.

The saying I heard a lot in the music world was that you spend the first half of your career learning how bad you are, then the second half learning how good you can be. Mediocrity is not humiliating unless you think it is greatness.

Is "unconscious incompetence" just a fancy word for ignorant? LOL

Partly, but it's possible for a person to be aware that he or she is ignorant. (Which is conscious incompetence, the next step up from unconscious incompetence.) :-D

An old teacher of mine used to quote this one, not a bad guide to the FP world:

"He who knows not and knows not that he knows not, is a fool, shun him,
He who knows not and knows that he knows not, is a child, teach him,
He who knows and knows not that he knows, is asleep, awaken him,
He who knows and knows that he knows is wise, follow him."

Just because you think its funny doesn't mean you are a bad coach, it just means that its funny. Imagine the same scenario in basketball..."my kid can do 360 dunks and can shoot from anywhere on the floor"....dad shows up...."Oh...I see you use a 10 ft rim and the big ball, he usually plays with a nerf ball and a 6 foot rim".

And no doubt a video of some insane trick shot where the ball ricochets off a roof, a moving car and the family dog to go right in the hoop.

Unfortunately we have all met someone who was similar to the dad in the OP, just not quite to that extreme.

Threads like this kill me. The "coaches" on this site I think have lost what it is to be a "coach".

Not at all. The coaches need to field a competitive team. If a player is not ready for the level he expects to play then he is doing his team and player a disservice. That's why there are minor leagues in professional baseball. Not every player can make the jump.
