Coaches,
I’m moving up in age group into a new division - ages 11-12. I’ve coached the last four seasons in 8-10. Looking for any advice on the major differences between these age groups and any tips on drills at this age level. In this new age group, kids are going from the slingshot pitch to the windmill, not being able to steal and 6 run per inning. Coaches – what advice do you have for this new rookie coach at this level?

You used to be able to get away with a mediocre C with the rules you stated, C becomes critical.

You might need to take your best non P and put her at C, even if you are probably giving up something at another position.

need a new set of balls ;) need 12s for all defensive work (can still use 11s for BP though, so they do not go to waste!)

Teach them everything they need to know to play the game.

At that age, they should know (or be learning) how to bunt, how to slide, and how to tag-up on fly balls. On an IF ground ball with runners on base, they should be looking to get the lead runner, not just automatically throw the ball to first. OF should be moving on every play to back up bases. Everyone should know about how to execute a proper OF relay. An athletic and skilled C is a GIGANTIC difference-maker. Work all players on all fielding skills. Every player - regardless of what position they primarily play - should be competent at fielding ground balls and fly balls. Your goal as a coach should be to build all-around ballplayers.

time to start finding your position players. you'll have a whole season to do it, give everyone a shot everywhere, and give your parents a heads up. remember, the map isn't the territory. teach yourself, teach your players.

I would suggest picking 3 girls for catcher and working with them or bringing in a coach to work with them. The best athlete may not be the best catcher. Start looking for a player that understands the game. You need 3 that know how to catch anyway.

I'm assuming the drop strike 3 will come into play. No more letting a girl swing and miss without running toward 1st if it isn't occupied. I would look at getting some Kobata skills tapes and working on some of the drills.
