travel softball club is top priority for us June-July-(early) August.

Before that, school softball season runs mid-March though Memorial Day.
During that season, school ball trumps travel.
And all travel coaches in our region get it.

DD made varsity volleyball this week as an incoming freshman.
Because it's not her main sport, I've set this criteria for conflicts:
School sport games trump all.
School sport practices trump travel sball practices.
Travel sball GAMES trump school sport practices.

This criteria allows her to work on pitching/hitting on her own time,
and still make the few weekend showcases/tournaments/play days her travel sball has scheduled for this Fall.
There may be some repercussions for missing a few school vball practices....

Quick question on this. Did you talk with school ball coaches before laying out this criteria as the travel sball trump school sport practices? How did they take that?

Our HS has minimal to no flexibility on missing school sports. While DD's teammates across the border in South Dakota point blank tell their school coaches this is what dd will give you. travel is first and i'll do school when it works for me. Its a tough dynamic. In the past i was just like the school coaches. You dont miss for anything.

On DD's SB team all 8 seniors had offers to play college softball. 1 was all state field hockey, 1 ran varsity track and 4 played varsity basketball. Playing Varsity sports in HS won't keep you from playing in college. Those coaches who think their 12-14U players need to focus so they can get the big scholarship are delusional. Now I will say that if your DD is a 6' freshman with junk in the low 60's you might want to consider dropping the other sports but only because pitching requires so much extra work.

DD's HS and many in our area have a HS first. The theory being you took a spot from someone so you owe the team 100%. I'm cool with that.

I think school anything takes priority, even middle school.

I used to be this way as well. This is what we communicated to our travel team, and exactly what we have done for the past 2 years. Now i'm not so sure. We drove through the night from Chattanooga to get my daughter back for volleyball after nationals. I live close to Sioux Falls, SD. the little league team there qualified for LL world series. The kids on that team that play football are all missing lots of football practice.

It's quite difficult

Hard to justify missing the LLWS for football practice. Most kids will never amount to anything past JR high or HS football. LLWS is a moment in time that will last forever.

Up until 9th or 10th grade I think you need to focus on building the athlete and not the player. Then when they have the athletic foundation they are well positioned to specialize and become an elite level player.

DD2 went out and made frosh volleyball team. Then at the parent meeting they said they would start practice at 6:00 P.M. Mon-Fri. DD2 figured out real quick she could not make hitting lesson, team softball practice, and agility training. Her friend got her spot on the VB team.......
Really weird most school have practice right after school 6pm is is very conducive to getting homework done and eating dinner

If it's a mandatory fundraiser on short notice I'd have to explain that we already have other plans and I'm happy to write a check for her portion of the funds earned

My DD has attempted to play middle school volleyball for the last two years. Both times, her season was cut short, or missed completely, due to injuries from other activities. This year (8th grade), she has zero interest in trying volleyball again. I hope she changes her mind. I think it would be very good for her. So far, her only significant sports interest has been softball. She does enjoy dominating PE dodgeball, however.

Usually the girls get the leftover times once the boys are finished taking all the time slots when there are limited facilities in the school.
