This is a hard lesson in travel, which in some part could be avoided if coaches were upfront from the very beginning about team goals. Are you playing to win or are you on a team that is looking to develop players?

It is easy to think that payment should equal playing time. On a competitive team, that simply isn’t the case. We’ve been on teams where my DD hardly ever sat and others where she was the MVBP(most valuable bench player).

My questions would be- What criteria is the best 9 based on? Do coaches kid automatically get a spot? What support/extra work is given to the bench to get better so they can break onto the field and in the line up?

Unfortunately, very few teams will offer a refund, even a prorated one.

Unfortunately I think the only recourse is to move on.

I certainly don't think it's fair. DD was on a team where the coach carried 13 players and the same 3 girls sat nearly every game. DD never sat and it was very awkward sometimes. There was one girl who only played *maybe* 10 innings all year. It was horrible.

DD's new coach plays everyone during pool games - he may be strategic as to who plays which pool games, but everyone sits some on Saturdays. Then on Sundays he generally plays his top 9 (they only carry 11) - but always gets everyone into the game at some point - whether just batting, running, fielding, etc. If there is an "easy" game for the first Sunday game he may switch things up and not only play his top 9.

Funny thing is - this new coach always has very successful teams, whereas the old coach who only played his favorites never had a successful team. Hmmm.

You mind sending this to my daughters previous 10U coaches? Especially since they both think it was okay to have the same girl catch every inning in 100+ degree temperature. lol

Ha - yep - one of the reasons we left that team was because DD would be that catcher - the one who caught every game. He even wanted her to catch after she literally passed out from dehydration just prior to the start of a game. He told her to drink some Gatorade and put her gear on. She is very respectful of her coach and started to head out...I shut that down quickly! She was 10. Yes 10 - no trophy is important enough to do that to a kid.

Simple question that I have yet to answer. When a coach takes your money with the stated expectation that your kid will play and doesn't what is the recourse?

You've been around here long enough to know you're not a troll posting something that a newbie would to try and get validation. However, you'll need to supply a lot more information about the situation. I know slimy coaches are out there. I believe they are the exception rather than the rule.

It seems the good teams carry more players. They usually allow the younger developing players to play against weaker opponents during pool play. Save the better players for quality teams and and bracket play. The best way for a good team to get better is to have competition for the spot. Makes players work for their position.

This puzzles me, ~10 innings. As a coach I would not be able to sleep at night. My travel BB program had minimum playing time so you show up to games (all things being equal) you played and only weather or mercy games might alter that. Even then we would just start the player the next game. The thought was if you were not good enough to play we are bad coaches and/or should not have taken the player in the first place.

In SB DD2 played vs Team X that was good at 10s but even then I noticed it was mostly the OF who were swapped and the INF positions were locked down every game regardless of score or situation. Fast forward several years and cross path with those coaches playing in a couple tournaments. We had a player who was on Team X for a season and she confirmed OF was revolving door of players and infield was same kids every inning.

At 10U outfield can be pretty boring, at 14U having a weak outfield is not a good thing and you can guess how the tournaments went for them. Of course parent coach team.

I can tell you from my personal experience - These arent coaches, simply "managers" they have 0 clue on how develop or actually coach they just know that they want their kid to be on a winning team because "losing sucks" or "I pay too much money for you to get the crap beat out of us"

My daughters coach literally said "I pulled a pitcher who needs the experience because I am avoiding the better teams in the tournament" so he pulled her after 3 batters (1 out 1 hit and 1 walk) to put in our "ace" so we can get the first seed.

She never pitched again and we played in at least 3 more tournaments. This same coach called all the parents together and told him that USSSA was making him bat only 10 players during bracket play (we had 11) and kept the same girl out of the lineup all year. She played every inning in the field though.

Since when is 10 year old so serious?

10U and under the parents will drive you nuts. At least for me they settled down a little bit as they got older.

(8U games are great, I find myself watching them. Always a crowd. Enjoy 50 people yelling to poor girl what to do with the ball)

Like alot of you I think this is a slippery slope to step on. Most of us think our DD is better than she really is at that time. I don't say anything when DD sits but I do however keep a little book so I know what's going on and can back up what somebody is complaining about. NO I am not the coach, I do this because we have played "DADDY BALL" and it really helped to show the ex-wife that I was not making things up. It also helps to shut DD down when she complains about sitting.
