Hey guys! I am wanting to discuss on exactly "how" to throw an inside pitch and an outside pitch. What exactly happens with the body? What are the minute differences, if any? I know that perfect repetition is the key to control and consistency. That is not what I am wanting to discuss here. I want to know the technicalities of throwing in and out. Thanks for your help! If there is another thread buried somewhere that already discusses this, feel free to post the link :)

DD's first pitching coach had been a relatively successful college pitcher. She said she always tried to make every pitch look the same and not use her landing or starting to change to change locations. BUT later in lessons when she was describing what she did herself she said she did change the landing location of her front foot minimally she thought like just an inch - and that it almost became subliminal like she didn't intend to change it. But at times you are pitching in a hole where your foot is landing in pretty much the same spot whether you like it or not and depending on that can screw you up. interested to hear from some other pitchers who can tell us what they did!

Hey, that's exactly what dd's PC says as well.
What my 11-ager says she does, so take it with a grain of salt, is just focus on the spot she wants the ball to start on, which is normally just outside the C's right knee or just inside her left. As a lefty her normal fb has a cut spin in and down to a RHB. Whether that makes her stride a little more one way or the other is hard to say but she is pretty good at working both sides of the plate.

It's more complex than this and in some regards its more simple than this...

It's more complex than "perfect repetition" because resistance and stability needs to be consistent in both the frontal and sagittal planes. If your 4 points of resistance in your torso are not resisting...directional control becomes a crap shoot...

Now if your DD is consistent and stable in those 2 planes, I like Crystal's response because it's simple, concise and not over thought...CP

A little science and math:

The plate is 17 inches wide. The pitcher releases about 40 feet from the plate. So, an outside pitch is *1 DEGREE* different from a pitch down the middle of the plate. An inside pitch is *1 DEGREE* different from a pitch down the middle of the plate.

For a pitcher throwing 52MPH, the fingers at release are traveling at 900 inches per second, the same speed as the ball.

Let's put that together: A pitcher has to vary the position of her fingers at release by 2 degrees while the fingers are moving at 900 inches per second.

You cannot "tell" someone how to throw an inside or outside pitch. You cannot "show" someone how to throw an inside or outside pitch.

The pitcher has to learn how to do this herself. There are drills you can do to help a pitcher learn how to do this. But, that is about all anyone can do for the pitcher. It is up to her.

I try to keep this as simple as possible. Take your drag foot shoe laces to the corner you're throwing..... This is a verbal que that has been really effective for me. Since the hips will follow the angle of the feet, it makes perfect sense that the hips will close an inch or two more on an outside pitch than they do on inside. This is assuming the pitcher is locking it down and brushes. If she is in fact locked down and brushing, the hip angle will play a roll in determining east and west. Notice I said plays a roll.... There is of course the fingers and wrist too, but that'll come with consistent reps.

Worked for DD... Love the feet first approach !!!

We done what was suggested on here. I set up 2 feet outside, she throws. Nxt pitch 2 feet out other side. Repeat and she gets the feel. Then the feel starts getting ingrained. No different than when they start throwing overhand. We don't teach to launch the ball at this angle and that velocity to throw from first to third. They throw it lands short, nxt is closer, then over their head then chest high.

When my DD could locate her fastball for strikes, I got a spool of string and put a nail in the middle of the pitching rubber, then ran the string to the inside corner of the plate and then to the outside corner of the plate. This triangle helped demonstrate the subtle difference in the drive leg plant location to throw inside vs. outside.
