So what is college softball like for the student-athlete?

I attended both a Division 1 and Division 2 school as a collegiate athlete. The difference between D1 and D2 isn't much. The typical day at a D1 School in the fall: 6:00am Conditioning/Weight Lifting 8:00-2:00pm Classes 3:00-5:00pm Practice (Mon- Saturday usually)... For a few weeks in...

    Missing Practice

Our attendance policy is that 1. we need to know in advance 2. Fall/Winter- other sport events, illness, school activities etc are excusable. Spring/Summer- Softball is number 1 priority. Just making sure it is not too harsh. Obviously the kids are young, however if they weren't serious about...

    Missing Practice

What are your policies/thoughts on kids missing practice for other sports? During the fall/winter, we were very open to them missing practice/games for other sports... I mean, they are kids. However, it is now softball season and I think we need to tighten up our attendance policy. What are...

    Question about a coaching style

Chinamigarden- I agree. The only time you should be using two hands is if the ball is directly to you (chest) or a ground ball you can field in the center of your body. Otherwise, forehands and backhands should be done with one hand. If you use two hands all the time you are limiting your reach.

    Stop Squishing the Bug

Cannonball, Marcus- Thank you for your feedback. The 'cues' and drills are very helpful. Much more helpful than someone telling me that this post makes them bury their head in their hands. I think a lot of us understand the pattern, and why we do what we do... especially those of us who played...

    Stop Squishing the Bug

If you watch the video posted above, you will see a combination of linear and rotational hitting mechanics. His first movement (after his load) is directed toward the ball. Once the front heel plants, it is a rotational movement around the ball. Squishing the bug is the term used to get young...

    Stop Squishing the Bug

Okay... so what’s the pattern or big picture that I am missing? No, the goal is not to get on the toe. The goal is to correctly transfer weight to generate optimal power. My question simply is how do you eliminate rotational tendencies. It’s not about the toe... that is just a ‘sign’ that they...

    Stop Squishing the Bug

I am a firm believer that hitting uses both a linear and rotational motion. I coach girls who were either taught a PURELY rotation swing (squishing the bug, spinning) or they are spinning on their own. They are young players (9-12) but I want to get them swinging with correct mechanics from the...

    It Finally Happened...

Parents can absolutely ruin a team. When I was in 12u, we had a 'dream team'. Went to ASA nationals, won nationals, lost a total of 5 games that year, had awesome team bonding, but little did we know a few parents were behind the scenes ruining it for us. The year after that, everyone split up...

    Teaching I/R to Young Players

Any of you have some good 'sayings' or drills that help young players learn I/R. Obviously, explaining internal rotation to 10 year olds is useless. I'm a former college player and was taught IR without even realizing it and now coach 10u players, most of which are 9 years old. I am brand new to...

    Intentionally hitting a girl?

Any athletes on this discussion understands the emotion and adrenaline that sports give you. It's all a part of the game. That poor girl was alone against the other travel athlete AND her dad acting like a lunatic... I would have done the same thing! In fact... I did intentionally hit someone...

Breaking in a New Glove - Right and Wrong Ways

Great post. I don't think people understand how important it is to take good care of your glove. Breaking it in incorrectly can result in a 'pancake' and can lead to errors. Old college coach actually told us to never keep our gloves in our bat bags. We had to carry it with us EVERYWHERE we...
