I'm a little old, but way before political correctness and title 9, a high school I attended had 2 female sports.

Track and Field Hockey.

We were the Tigers, and they were called the TigerBelles.

I wonder if the term "Belle" is considered sexist today?

Probably inevitable. If you think of it a different way, they're all Volunteers. Saying "Lady" in front almost seems like you're saying they're a cut below, or not "real" Volunteers.

Of course, I'm not from there so it doesn't really have any impact on me. I suppose if the men's teams weren't very good the women might want to be separated from them. :)

I'm not a fan of the ''Lady'' tag on women's teams. It doesn't offend me, and I don't care what the University of Tennessee decides to do, but I don't get it. There's a local fastpitch organization called the Lady Tigers. What does Lady add? How is a Lady Tiger different than any other Tiger? I asked my daughter just now about it. Tried to be neutral. She's a high school freshman. Asked her if she'd want to be the Cougars or the Lady Cougars. She said, ''Cougars. We don't need to verify that we're girls. We're all Cougars.'' That's kinda the way I see it. But I guess there are bigger issues in the world of sports.

It doesn't bother me (as a woman) but it bugs the crap out of my DD. She says that if they are going to call them Lady (insert mascot name) then the boys should be Gentleman (insert mascot name).

Wow - I guess I'm older than I thought - I still remember when being called a lady was a compliment. It has never meant (at least to me) that the girl/woman was not a tough or skilled player.

I really was born in the wrong era.

The problem is not the word 'lady.' It's about equality. It's about whether you want student-athletes and lady student athletes, or just student-athletes. Another way to view it - Let's say you are the head coach of your daughter's softball team. Would you want a parent to refer to you as the team's lady coach? Or just coach?

Very odd. I'm a life long resident of TN. In the south, the term "lady" is one of respect, unlike girl-woman. Any female can be........well a girl-woman. Only respectable females ( in the south ) are referred to as "ladies". I'd like to know who influenced the change, guessing someone not raised in the south, or not accustom to our traditions.
