So Cal
When the ump gets nailed by a pitch, I have found that barking at my catcher, "The ump is not your backstop. Catch the ball!", is very effective for keeping the ump in a good frame of mind. I often get a smile and a nod, and occasionally, a "thank you".

I couldn't let it slide in good conscience. I sent a lengthy email a few minutes ago. I am an AC on the team, but the HC and the other AC and I were all HCs for rec teams this year so we all signed up to protect these girls and I told her parents that I would make sure that this got followed up on. I said in the email that I would not feel comfortable having this umpire behind the plate at another one of our games and given that I just can't let the issue go.

I wasn't even there and this pisses me off. It takes a mighty small man to bully a 10yo from a position of authority while she's learning the skills.
Extending his logic, I'd like to tap the back of his head on the ground for every time he tapped her helmet. It's totally fair because I'm bigger and stronger.

The area director has emailed me multiple times already and copied the UIC of the tournament this weekend to make him aware of the situation. I am confident that it is being handled properly. My stomach is in knots just thinking about this whole thing. I coach these kids because I don't want them to have to deal with this sort of nonsense so when something like this happens it tends to get my papa bear instincts fired up.

Props to you for taking the steps necessary to defend your players. Cheers to you, sir!

Yeah any UIC and TD worth their salt would simply make sure this ump stops getting games....odds are this is not the first time someone has said anything or that they have heard things. Way to speak up!!

What part of the country was this in. We had an ump in Sacramento a couple of years ago that wasn't this bad, but was nasty to all the kids.

Time for several high fastballs that the catcher "accidentally" misses, or even better "cup check time" for an ump like that.

Nope. Accidentally missing is one thing. If the ump can't deal with that - especially at the 10U level - there's a problem with the ump. Intentionally moving so the ump takes a direct hit is inexcusable, and the wrong way to deal with the situation (on many levels).
