This weekend in a game my dd was playing in they had a couple calls I didnt understand. The play was there is a runner on 2nd the batter lays down a bunt then drops her bat making contact with the ball a second time. The batter runs to first and our catcher throws her out. The plate umpire calls deadball and calls the batter out. In the mean time the baserunner on second leaves on contact reaches 3rd rounds and comes home to score. The other coach comes unglued saying shes not out because it made contact with the bat in fair territory. The ump changed his call said it was not a dead ball and the batter is out cause she was thrown out at first and runner that scored counts. What is the correct call? If it matters 1 out. It was a local tournament saying they follow asa rules.

If the bat hits the ball a 2nd time in fair territory the batter is out, the ball is dead and any runners return to the last base touched at the time of the infraction.

Doesn't it also matter if the ball hit the bat instead of bat hitting the ball. For example, if she dropped the bat and the bat is in fair territory and not moving, and the ball rolls into the bat, and in the umpire's judgment there was no intent to interfere, then the ball is live.

Wording from ASA, Rule 7, Section 6, Part K, sub-part 2: When the batter drops the bat and the ball rolls against the bat in fair territory, and, in the umpire's judgment, there was no intent to interfere with the ball. EFFECT: The ball is live.

If bat hit ball (bat is in motion) - Dead ball batter/runner is out. Runner returns to 2b

If ball hits bat (bat is motionless) - Live ball. Run rabbit run.

If the bat hits the ball, the ball is dead and the Batter/Runner is out.
If the ball rolls into the bat the ball is live.
Why??
Long ago base ball batters would bunt the ball in the air and then swing at it for a power hit.
The rules were changed so a batter can not make contact with the ball twice.
So--if the Bat rolls into the ball , you have an out.

Reversing a dead ball call can be very messy because you can't place a team in jeopardy for acting upon the ball being dead (10-3-C). If the runner scored because the team on defense didn't act because the ball was dead, the runner should be placed at 3B. If the defense didn't let down, the run scores.

This should have been the end of the thread.
