A good catcher throws the ball hard down the line in fair territory regardless of the position of the runner. After all, a dead ball is much better than a clean out.

Absolutely true on any fair ball. Time allowing, a good first baseman will be slightly off the bag in fair territory providing a target clear of the running lane because not all umpires are perfect!

bringing this old thread back to life...does the runner have to be entirely inside the running lane? As in in both feet? If she favors the left side of the lane and only her right foot is in the lane is that enough to not be called for interference?

USSSA only says "outside the three-foot running lane". Since they don't clarify what "outside" means, I would use the rules pertaining to the batter's box as a guide - (Sec.4.A) " Prior to the pitch, the batter must have both feet completely in the batter’s box. The batter may touch the lines, but no part of the foot may be outside the lines prior to the pitch."

So to answer your question: both feet = entirely inside. Both feet, but various appendages flailing outside the lines, I'd still go with entirely inside.

Any rule with regard to lines, a foot outside the line is considered out of whatever they line designates.
