Specifically for the umpires of the board. 3-1 count on the batter. Pitcher throws strike two. Catcher was confused and thought it was strike three so she threw the ball to first to begin "throwing it around the horn". Umpire called that action by the catcher a ball, giving the batter a walk.
Is it a ball to throw down to first mistakenly? Should add there were no runners on base so it was clear she wasn't trying to throw anyone out, just got the count wrong.

USSSA Rule 6 Sec 2B:

The catcher shall return the ball directly to the pitcher after each pitch,
except after a strikeout or a putout made by the catcher, or to play on a
base runner.

PENALTY: The batter is awarded a ball.

EXCEPTION: Intentionally violating the rule in order to walk the batter
without pitching shall not result in a ball being awarded to the batter.

Thanks. Maybe because it rarely happens, but I've never heard that one before.

Question-So if the batter takes off running to first base after ball three, there is no penalty on the batter? Wouldn't it be smart to have all your batters run to first base after every ball three.
