I coach my daughter's 8u team and the girls have to be the base coaches for the last half of the season. They learn a ton from being out there. We work on it at practices and it's a lot of fun to watch them during the games because they're paying attention and in the game. The best part is when the inning is over and my 3rd base coach comes in and tells another player that she wasn't watching her when she was getting waved to 3rd. 
It makes it fun for them, and it gets the girls vested in their team and their play on the field, not to mention they are a hoot to watch. I will do this at every level I get to coach at because it really helps the girls with understanding the game and being in the game, which is sometimes hard to teach in practice.
